Silvia Passiflora submitted Florentinae: Spoken Word Concertinas in Sacred Gardens for Grammy® Consideration in Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.

Florentinae gathers seven spoken-word concertinas, each blending poetic narrative with live one-take ukulele performance, recorded exactly as performed on stage. These works move between ancestral memory, mythic retelling, and contemporary reckoning — from the fierce voice of Machete Mama to the WWII battlefield witness of Those Who Held the Line and the haunted lyricism of The Man with the Blue Ukulele. Together, they create a living archive of Southern Gothic poetics, rooted in the garden and reaching toward civic memory.

All recordings are uncompressed, high-resolution 24-bit masters, performed on ukulele and voice in single takes, designed for long-term archival preservation and ready for film or civic presentation.

All works written and performed solely by Silvia Passiflora
Produced by John Pineiro
Recorded and mastered at Perfect Image Recording, Nashville Metadata engineered by Silvia Passiflora Commercially released on major platforms (except Spotify) on August 4, 2025

A spoken word memoir honoring the artist’s mother — a woman who carried love in her arms and left gardens in her wake.

Lyrics: Mama with a machete/ Skirt hitched up past her knees/ Chopping away at a city jungle/ With Bruce Lee’s expertise/

She’s moved into the city/ To a bungalow in town/ But still hits coconuts between the eyes/ And wears orchids in her crown/

Still the tiger she ever was/ Though the machete is used for cooking/ Coconut, ginger and garlic too/ It’s steamy in her kitchen/

But she never dreams of island life/ The pond was too small there/ In the city she grows a banana tree/ She’s made her garden there

A surreal Florentinae with flamenco-style ukulele. A spider answers the poet’s questions with riddles of longing, sleep and dream logic.

Lyrics: When asked about my dream recall/ A spider crawled across my desk/ I questioned it in black and white/ And to my heart’s distress/ The spider answered me in colored hues/ and listed this list instead:/

A dream inside a streamyard,/ Bending like a willow/ A tomcat dreams in red/ upon a royal pillow/

And the green freedom of a cockatiel/ Pretending yet to be/ an eagle spread upon a bed/ of quilted reverie/

Do ant queens scream when boiling water defeats their colony?/ Do oranges dream in color?/ Do salmon doubt their epic swim beyond the rushing stream?/ And why is it you’re a character in my every dream?/

I whispered to the talking spider,/ ”Why is it I can never remember?”/ This is what the spider said,/ “Maybe, my dear, you write the dream instead.”/

A blues-inflected Florentinae retelling a classic fable. Themes of instinct, betrayal and impossible hope coil beneath a single haunting line.

Lyrics: Once upon a time/ There was a scorpion and a frog/ They were creatures of the water/ They were creatures of the land/ They had a lot in common/ They were fast friends/ Also they were in love

These two met at the bottom of a well/ How they got there, it’s hard to tell/ But when they both started singing/ The echo of their song/ Coming out of that well/ Drew the whole village out/ And they were saved/ By a bucket ride - outta hell

They were creatures of the water/ They were creatures of the land/ They had a lot in common/ They were fast friends/ Also they were in love/

Time went by

And one day the scorpion turned to the frog/ and said,/ “I’m tired/ and I’m hungry….”

A spoken-word ukulele blues and the discovery of a pentimento in Picasso's The Old Guitarist at the Art Institute of Chicago. A Southern noir ballad of estranged lovers, both musicians, and the woman hidden behind the song.

Lyrics: There’s the man with the blue ukulele/ In the night, framed in a dark blue light/ In shades of blue/ With three chords and the truth/ He thinks of you/ Oh oh, he’s been up since 2/ Playing the blues/ Playing the blues/ Playing the blues

There’s a classic on the screen, it’s The Big Sleep/ With a lady villain and nekkid women/ By his side sleeps a long-haired rescue/ Always faithful, she’s his true blue (true blue)/ There’s a secret underneath the painting/ There’s a woman hidden there, but it’s getting late/ Oh, it’s getting late

And she’s been up since 2/ Playing the blues, playing the blues

There’s the man with the blue ukulele/ In the night, framed in a dark blue light/ In shades of blue/ With three chords and the truth/ He thinks of you/ And oh oh, he’s been up since 2/ He’d go to any length, any length, any length/ To be with you, playing the blues, playing the blues

Lyrics: The mind may lose its meadow/ but the lines still hold the field/ old poems rise like wildflowers/ in the places time won’t yield

The hand forgets the planting/ but the roots recall the rain/ the forest names its guardians/ and remembers them by name

A spoken word piece in tribute to the artist’s grandfather, an island forest ranger during WWII in the Philippines.

Lyrics: When my grandfather roamed the trees/ he found the towns the maps won’t see/ He named them after daughters in the family/ planted their names like seeds in wind

No monument, no marble stone/ just syllables in fields grown wild/ a village whispered down the bone/ a river singing like a child

The maps may fade, the trails may die/ but names, once sown, will learn to fly/ And I, his heir of root and frame/ still carry blossoms from his name

Lyrics: Lay your troubles down/ Evening hums a lullaby/ The mother cow calls her young/ In the stillness of the night

Everywhere darkness lays/ Gentle kisses on our heads/ As slumber overtakes us one and all/ Drifting off to bed

Good night, dear sweetgrass/ Hope the farm sleeps well tonight/ The moon keeps watch above/ In the kingdom of the sky

Oh my dear sweetgrass/ I turn and take one last look/ I say a prayer in my head/ That your dreams are soft and good

Good night, dear sweetgrass/ Hope the farm sleeps well tonight/ The moon keeps watch above/ In the kingdom of the sky

Good night!
